What is a gum lift? A gum lift, also known as a gingivectomy, is a dental procedure in which part of your gums around your teeth are removed to expose more tooth. The purpose of the procedure is to reshape the gum line for a more uniformed look. This creates a visual increase in length or width of the tooth and results in a more appealing smile.

How is it done? First, the surgeon will provide you with a local anesthetic to numb the pain. Then, in most cases, a scalpel is used to cut out and remove a portion of the gums. However, some surgeons use a laser in place of the scalpel. The laser improves the process because it can immediately seal off the opening and reduce bleeding, which results in less pain and less recovery time.

How is the healing process? It can take anywhere between a few days and a few weeks for the gums to heal. Over-the-counter painkillers are often effective enough to relieve the pain after surgery. You will be able to eat and drink as usual once the numbing wears off. During the healing process, it will be especially important to take gentle care of your teeth while your gums heal. Remember to brush and floss your teeth gently and use a mouthwash that is alcohol free.

Do I need this procedure?

Often, gum disease, or gingivitis, can lead to the need for a gum lift. You may need a gum lift if you experience the following symptoms:

• Excess/overgrown gums
• Bad breath
• Swollen gums
• Inflamed or bleeding gums
• Sensitive teeth

However, in many cases this procedure is done purely for cosmetic reasons. You may want this procedure if:

• You have a gummy smile
• You feel your teeth are “too small”
• You want to improve the appearance of your smile
• You want to become more confident in your smile

What are some benefits of this procedure? Medically, a gum lift can greatly decrease your chances of bacteria build up leading to gum disease. The diseased part of the gum is removed to help prevent further damage caused by bacteria and plaque build-up.
